Case Study: Pioneering Change in Santa Fe: The Homewise Inc. Story

In the heart of Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the echoes of history whisper through aging single-family homes, a beacon of change emerged. Homewise Inc., a visionary nonprofit community development financial institution, set its sights on a neglected part of the city, brimming with potential. This is a tale of El Camino Crossing, a transformative development, where dreams of affordable homes, sustainable living, and community empowerment converge.

Homewise's mission transcends the ordinary; it's a commitment to crafting not just houses but homes that transcend economic barriers. In a city where the cost of living rivals the charm of its historic streets, Homewise dared to redefine the narrative. El Camino Crossing, born out of resilience, stands as a testament to the power of vision and the pursuit of a community's well-being.

Homewise's Answer to Santa Fe's Housing Dilemma

Santa Fe, a high-cost resort haven, posed a challenge for its local residents — a trifecta of issues: availability, affordability, and quality in housing. Homewise stepped into the fray, recognizing the dire need for change. The canvas for this change lay in central Santa Fe, an area that had long been overlooked, overshadowed by aging structures and a lack of local amenities.

El Camino Crossing wasn't just a development; it was a strategic move to "make the market." Situated at the crossroads of two main connectors, this canvas was ripe for transformation. The community-oriented vision saw beyond the lack of previous investments, identifying the inherent advantages: transit-oriented, walkable, biker-friendly, and in proximity to jobs, services, and schools. It was a chance to rewrite the narrative and bring about positive change.

The El Camino Crossing Blueprint

Homewise didn't just construct buildings; it envisioned possibilities. El Camino Crossing wasn't a monolith but a diverse landscape of single-family homes, condominiums, and live-work units for artists and creatives. The 40 single-family homes, a mix of one to four bedrooms, were complemented by two condominium buildings housing 35 units, catering to both conventional and live-work preferences.

What set El Camino Crossing apart was the meticulous planning — ensuring a mix of household sizes and a variety of home sizes. From a cozy one-bedroom unit to a spacious four-bedroom haven, each home was a testament to Homewise's commitment to quality living. LEED for Homes Gold and Build Green New Mexico Gold certifications underscored the project's dedication to sustainable and eco-friendly living.
